Dermalogica Clean Start Review

A while back I was sent the Dermalogica MediBac range to review, and unfortunately I wasn't really very happy with the results. Dermalogica contacted me afterwards and said that it looked as though I had been advised wrongly (by my local Dermalogica) about the products I needed, and they would send me the Clean Start kit to try instead. It makes sense really, the MediBac range is targeted at people suffering with adult acne, and although I am an adult, I have had this acne since I was eight years old so I'm guessing it's more of a 'teen skin' acne, therefore Clean Start is what I should have been advised to use.

I think Clean Start is a lot less daunting than the MediBac range was; I felt a bit bewildered by all the different products in that range but feel as though the Clean Start range is much simpler and easier to understand. The range comprises of eight different products:

'Wash Off' Cleanser: Like the MediBac cleanser, this is really gentle on the skin and is great to use in the shower. Not really ideal for taking make up off, but it's perfect for giving your skin a good cleanse.

'All Over Clear' Toner: This is a spray toner, and as much as I like using the traditional toner-and-a-cotton-pad method, I have to say spritzing this on and waiting for it to sink in is a lot easier (and more refreshing!) Again, this doesn't irritate my skin in the slightest.

'Welcome Matte' Moisturiser: I really love this moisturiser. It feels nice on the skin and keeps my skin looking matter than I've ever really known it to (although I think DW Max Cover has helped this too, so I won't give it all the credit). It contains SPF 15 too which is really good, as I know it's looking after my skin as well as keeping it matte!

'Brighten Up' Moisturiser: This is basically a tinted moisturiser. I'm not really the biggest fan of tinted moisturisers (having bad skin, I never really want the 'natural' look) but I actually really like this one. It's quite dark but blends into my skin perfectly when I've been tanned, and it also contains SPF 15. I think it would be good for taking on holiday, when you obviously don't want to wear much make up!

'Bedtime for Breakouts': I really, really like this product. It's basically a gel you pop a thin layer of all over your face at night, and it helps against breakouts. I find in the morning my skin looks lots better and any spots I had have gone down considerably.

'Ready, Set, Scrub!' Face Mask/Scrub: I avoided using this for ages because I thought it was just a normal scrub, little did I know it's primarily a face mask, which you then scrub and wash off (my favourite kind of face mask!) I absolutely love this product, it smells divine (so lemony zesty) and it makes my skin feel lovely.

'Mouth Lip Shine': I was a little bewildered as to where this fits in with the range, but nonetheless I was happy to give it a try. It's basically a lip moisturiser, and it looks like a gloss but doesn't feel sticky or horrible at all (I usually hate lipglosses for this reason!) it leaves my lips so moisturised and soft (it contains cocoa butter as well as other moisturising ingredients) and it's definitely going to be my go-to lip product from now on, as I always suffer with dry, chapped lips, and this helps lots.

So, what has my experience with this Dermalogica range been like? Well, considerably better than before. I now realise that Clean Start is definitely the range for me, it has improved my skin so, so much. Whereas before my skin was constantly covered in spots, the majority of which were on my cheeks and chin, I now have really clear skin, only really experiencing the odd spot every now and again.  My skin doesn't look perfect, I have lots of acne scars that I really want to get rid of, but my skin has cleared up such a lot since using this so I'm really happy. Normally, I'm constantly searching for products to get rid of acne, but now I've found this I really don't feel the need. More than anything I feel like my skin is finally back to its best, and I'm more concerned about getting rid of any scarring now. I am SO happy with this range of products, they've definitely helped as much as the Proactiv range I tried a while back  did, I just hope the results stay this time!

Like the MediBac range, this range is pretty pricey so I'm not sure I'll be rushing out to buy all of it (having said that I've been using the range for months and most of the products are really full still, so you do get a lot for your money!), but there are some certain products I love that I feel I would repurchase in the future, as they really did work for me. I also feel my skin is not as oily as it used to be, and I find my make up stays on better due to this. I'm really, really impressed with the range and think it just goes to show that it really is important to get the right range for your skin.

Have you tried any of Dermalogica's ranges before? What did you think?

  8. Oh that's great, I've always found Dermalogica really good - I would never have guessed that that was Dermalogica from the packaging though, it's a bit different/more colourful to their usual stuff.

  10. I tried this range and found it really didn't agree with my skin. It made my skin worse after a while and came out with an allergic reaction. I'm a big fan of Dermalogica but found that this just wasn't for me.

    1. Aw no really?! Such a shame you didn't get on with it. I guess everyone is different, like with me and the MediBac range, it completely wasn't for me whereas this has been really good for my skin! xx

  11. Wish the range was a bit cheaper but the 'Bedtime for Breakouts' sounds great and I'd love to try the moisturiser and scrub! My acne can be under control one day and the next my face is sooo sore and it really gets me down.. I'm 19 but acne seems never ending :( X

  12. I love the names and packaging of these. I love how you can tell straight away what each product is for and when to use. Some face products are too fancy and mixtures of this and that and can only be applied here and there.. It all confuses me! All in all, seems like a great range for when overtime has been dished out and I'm feeling a bit flash hehe xxx

  13. I've always wanted to try Dermalogica but never got around to it for some reason, I quite like the sound of these products although I'd probably choose just 2 to use daily as I'm lazzzy! x

  14. This looks great, but there's a lot of products for one range, I wouldn't want to spend so much money at once! I really do want to get rid of my spots though!

  19. Great packaging! I don't think this would work for my skin, though - weirdly my skin is less acne-prone when it's really nourished and moisturised.

I've been using an argan oil-based product by Narson Skin for spots and blemishes a few times a week, and it's actually amazing - it's helped even my skin as well! I've mentioned it in my January Detox post: http://www.freshlookbeautyblog.com/2012/01/january-detox-part-2.html.

I've also just ordered their Rosehip oil and Seaweed face mask to combat acne scars and redness, which I think you'd be really interested in. You can find them on their site here: http://www.narsonskin.co.uk/onlineshop/. The spots and blemishes worked really well, so I have faith in these products too!

    Sorry for the super-long comment!
