My Top Tips for a Flawless Base

In my opinion, the most important thing when it comes to makeup has got to be creating a flawless base. No matter how great your brows, your lipstick or your eye shadow looks, if the base ain't right, the face ain't right.

Suffering with bad skin for years has meant that when it comes to perfecting a flawless base, I've learnt all the tips and tricks in the book. I've learnt that preparation is definitely key - and that if you haven't properly prepped your skin through exfoliation, moisturisation etc., you'll find it a lot harder to get your base right.

When it comes to applying your base, it's definitely not a simple case of 'whack on any old foundation and go', but instead it takes time and a whole lot of blending, plus a selection of different products, to get your base on point. I thought I would go through my favourite products for creating a flawless base, how I use them, and why I love them so much, to help you out if you're struggling to achieve that flawless, airbrushed skin look.

First up - it's got to be primer. Primer is one of the most important things, I personally think, when it comes to getting your base makeup right. Whilst you might think your foundation applies just fine without it, primer really is an essential in creating a completely flawless base that stays put. My go-to primer will always be, without a doubt, Benefit's POREfessional primer. If you haven't tried this yet - you need to. No other primer comes close to this little miracle-worker. I've written a full review here, but in short, if you want something that diffuses pores, keeps your foundation in place and makes it easier to apply, then you need to invest in this.

It's no secret of mine that Estee Lauder's Double Wear foundation will always be my numero uno. When it comes to coverage, longevity and matte-finish, this foundation ticks all the boxes. Paired with Benefit's Porefessional, these two work perfectly in sync with one another. Double Wear gives amazing coverage, blends beautifully, doesn't transfer and stays in place all day. It is the dream foundation for high-coverage lovers. Don't believe me? Check out my full review on it here

Whilst the coverage Estee Lauder's Double Wear gives is amazing for blemishes, I like to get a little help from YSL's Touche Eclat when it comes to concealing my under-eye circles. I'd heard people rave about this brightening concealer before but I never knew how great it would be until it came into my life. This little baby is phenomenal at brightening and concealing dark circles and puffiness, and always makes me look wide awake, even when I'm not. I use the shade number 1 and find it is absolutely perfect for my skin.

Finally, to finish things off and set your base, I find a translucent loose powder works best. My all-time favourite is probably Paul & Joe's Face Powder, but I'm actually really loving Benefit's Porefessional Agent Zeo Shine PRO Powder at the moment. Despite not falling in love with it to begin with, it's been growing on me since and I really like the matte finish it gives. If you want my full review, check it out here

What are your go-to products when it comes to creating a flawless base? I'd love to hear your recommendations!

  4. Double wear is fab foundation! I wore it for years and still have a bottle, but for me it is a little heavy for everyday wear! I also find that sprtizing your face with a finishing spray helps my makeup look flawless!

  8. The next time you head to your Estee Lauder counter ask about their new Double Wear BB highlighting concealer! It's the same idea as the touche eclat but I actually got to try a little and love it even more. :)

  12. Love POREfessional, and YSL's Touche Eclat. What concealer do you use that isn't for under eyes? I have been searching for the perfect concealer for spots and would love some recommendations. All of mine are too light for spots and can only be used under my eyes.
